Mosquito Hunting

I found this old ‘essay’ that I wrote years ago. It was meant as an entry for the “real’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but I never posted it there. Guess I didn’t think it was good enough. It’s kind of funny, though.

Mosquito Hunting

The Earth, although mostly harmless, is infested in places with some very irritating life-forms (excluding humans). As an alien visitor you can choose to avoid these places, but if you absolutely have to see them, here are a few tips about mosquito-hunting.

The irritation level caused by mosquitoes is determined by a number of factors. If you’re unable to hear high frequency sounds and have a blood chemistry based on copper in stead of iron, you will have no trouble at all with mosquitoes. In fact, you can stop reading this right now and go enjoy the interesting experiences these places have to offer (such as being eaten by alligators.)

Right, if you’re still here you’ve got a problem. Mosquitoes are tiny flying insects that attempt to drive you crazy by emitting a high-pitched whine. They also sting and drink the blood of certain organisms. You can use various types of poison to kill or discourage them, but mostly those still leave you with a period of listening to that maddening whine. The most immediate method is to manually squash the mosquito. This is not easy.

First you have to locate it, and the only way is by ear. You have to triangulate its position based on that irritating sound. When you’ve located it, NEVER take your eyes off it, you’ll just lose it if you do. If this means walking backwards and falling over your suitcases, so be it.

Also, do not try to catch it with your hand. In my experience this is extremely likely to fail, and you’ll lose the mosquito while checking in your hand if you’d caught it.

The best way is to have a (medium to hard) pillow ready, for best accuracy and squashing effectiveness. Follow your mosquito around until it is close to a level, solid surface (such as a wall or ceiling) and then throw the pillow at it with enough force to squash the mosquito without damage to the wall or ceiling.

If you’re lucky this will leave the mosquito stuck on the surface as a trophy of your victory. Otherwise, you’ll have to locate it and try again.

Anyway, this provides a lot of excitement in some very boring places, unless of course, you enjoy being eaten by alligators.

(800×600 58kb). Another photo taken on Friday at the place where I sprained my ankle. This one was taken with the Kodak camera. It was still fairly early and I love the darkness of the cloud against the golden grass.

The ankle is happy in the ankle brace (lucky that I have one, and it’s finally getting some more use for the R520 I paid for it!) and I’ve been taking it really easy all weekend. Played a lot of Oblivion: Shivering Isles using my Clouded Leopard character Skye. I just have to post a picture of him!

The Clouded Leopard race is supplied by the extremely talented Slof, and so is the armour he’s wearing, which comes from Slof’s Oblivion Goth Shop. He’s also using Robert’s male body replacer to get those nice muscles.

Orange flowers

(800×600 104kb). As in, flowers that are orange, not flowers of an orange tree. I have no idea what these are. I took the photo with my cellphone this morning, about 3 minutes after I sprained my right ankle on a rock. Was hobbling along back to the car when I saw this.

I have bad ankles. I can’t even remember how many times I’ve sprained them. The worst was on April 30, 2004. I was carrying a stack of pizza boxes down a staircase in Roman’s Pizza in Hatfield, and couldn’t see that the bottom step was about 20 cm higher than the rest. Misjudging the distance, I sprained my left ankle most horribly. (I did not drop the pizzas, I have priorities!) I watched it swell up right there. Made it back to campus, somehow made it home, drank a lot of aspirin. Went to Menlyn the next day with Haarsha and watched ‘Main Hoon Na’ for the first (but not the last) time.

On the following monday I finally got to the doctor, who sent me to hospital for a sonar scan of the very blue/black/purple swollen thing that came out of my boot. Sonar revealed a torn tendon and, from a previous injury, bits of bone floating around in there. I wore a special ankle brace for 6 weeks and had a stiff ankle for over a year.

So I’m very careful when walking, but sometimes things just happen, I suppose. Today’s sprain doesn’t feel too bad, although it is swollen and hot and hurts. I don’t think it will bother me for too long. Guess I’m becoming an expert on my ankles. :-)

Dewdrop Angel

(800×600 63kb). A little flower, one of a great many growing next to, um, was it Lone Creek or Bridal Veil Falls? Anyway, next to a waterfall, so technically those drops aren’t ‘dew’ drops. But whatever.

I have such sore muscles! My mom and I rode our neighbours’ thoroughbreds the day before yesterday. We had a, shall I call it gruelling, lesson, trotting round and round in a very small arena. It was a good work-out, certainly. And we both learned a lot. Mostly that we have muscles we’ve never used before, haha! Next lesson tomorrow afternoon, if I can walk by then. This morming we went for a sedate ride-out on the little Boer ponies. I like them more than the huge racehorses, they’re a lot more friendly, for one.

I got Oblivion’s next expansion, Shivering Isles, yesterday, but I still haven’t managed to see what it looks like. I got a strange texturing glitch after installation and had to uninstall everything and start from scratch. At least I managed to rescue my savegames and all the mods are now working correctly. I have no idea what was wrong.

Lone Creek and other waterfalls

(483×600 54kb). A long long long weekend. Friends Hermien and Jeanri came to visit and we cut and assembled their wedding invitation cards on Friday. Nice little assembly line!

Saturday morning a cold front moved through so it was raining on and off, but we finally grabbed a gab in the weather and set off to Sabie for a day of looking at waterfalls and other scenery. Had nice pancakes in Sabie too! We looked at Lone Creek Falls (pictured here), Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil falls. Then to Mac Mac Pools for a little hike and lots of photo-taking. Got home after dark due to the late start.

Yesterday I did nothing at all.

Today I spent the remaining bandwidth (and then some) for the month on downloading Oblivion mods and I’ve been playing and testing them all afternoon. Our first veldt fire seems to be just over the hill and it’s been making the air unbreathable. I wonder if I’ll be beating fires tonight …

I must have a life, I suppose. But we won’t mention HOW MANY TIMES I’ve seen the ones I’ve seen! Some, of course, I’ll pay not to see again, haha! And of course this list is missing an awful lot of good movies!

(960×600 53kb). Today’s picture is a painting made from a photo I took of a little wildflower outside in the veldt. Paint effect made by the wonderful Painter X. It’s in widescreen format (but reduced in size for bandwidth conservation) because it’s my desktop wallpaper at the moment. I’m going through them quite fast now since it’s so easy to create nice wallpapers!

Right, excuses for the long long delay in blog posts. I don’t know what interfered on Wednesday last week, possibly I was just lazy! On Thursday my Dad and I drove to Johannesburg and Pretoria for some shopping and a borehole site selection at a gorgeous ‘estate’ in Faery Glen in Pretoria. We only got back home at 8pm at which time I was way too tired to bother with blogs. On Friday we were off to Ermelo area for a borehole site selection at a new clinic in a settlement called Sheepmoor. Beautiful countryside over there, but I didn’t get any photos, unfortunately. Got home at 4pm and I just collapsed and slept, I was so tired. On Saturday morning a whole bunch of neighbours gathered and worked to clear the road of overgrowing branches. Did you know, thorn trees fight back! I’m scratched all over, and it messed up a new shirt. (Lesson learned: Do not wear new clothing when you’re working in the bush!) After that I was beat again, go figure. Yesterday we had lots of thunder activity and a power failure, so my computer was safely unplugged and useless most of the day. Today we went shopping in the morning, had thunder in the afternoon (but no rain) and things seem quiet now so here I am finally.

Oh of course, on Wednesday I had a bit of an exhausting riding lesson - lots of trotting. But that’s really no excuse for not posting, haha! We’re going again tomorrow morning.

Dew Dropped

Dragon Flight

(768×480 40kb). This is my current desktop background. It’s a screen capture from Oblivion showing my character flying on the back of Akatosh. A most wonderful mod indeed! The screencap went through Painter X to end up looking like a real painting. Painter makes it very easy to produce artwork close to the real thing with no experience at all. A nice toy but I hope to use it seriously too.

The weekend was nicely boring. I engraved my Horus pic on wood and coloured it with Indian ink and glitter pens. Might post a photo of it someday. I watched some Jackie Chan movies - it’s been a while since I last watched them and it’s a lot of fun to rediscover all my old favourites. And of course, I flew around Tamriel on the back of a dragon! That is the coolest mod I ever found. Akatosh Mount by Saiden Storm.
